We arrived late at night in Athens and my girlfriends mother did not arrive until the next day. So we had to just find an Airbnb just to sleep in. I wanted to find the cheapest one since we will only be there for about 8 hours. The cheapest Airbnb i could find in Athens and that was close to out next hotel was $39. As I am writing this, I am currently in a hotel in Hue Vietnam that is $8 a night and this hotel is much better than our situation in Athens….
But anyway, I start off the video talking about how I am confused on how to use the shower. In the Airbnb, it was just a shower head right next to the toilet. In America, I am used to having a dedicated closed off area to where I can shower. So this situation was weird for me since I would get the whole bathroom soaked. I was not sure how to best take a shower, so I pretty much took a bird bath.
The first day was more of a relaxed day due to us needing to do laundry. What was weird about the laundry mat, is that the change dispenser gave some euro and then some weird coin with a hole in it. The washer and dryers can of course take that weird coin, but it was weird to me of how that company would setup their change that way. In the end, I was stuck with one of those weird coins that I cannot do anything with. Only those specific machines in Athens will take that coin. I guess I will have to save it for the next time I am in Athens?
While our clothes were washing, we walked by a close by market to where I can find a wallet that can hold change. I did like the area better that was was close to our hotel. By our hotel was name brand stores while the little market was mom and pop shops. It was more souvenir type of stuff, but I do like looking at this kind of stuff. The main issue I do have with markets and these types of places is that everybody is selling the same thing. So there isn’t that much new things to see as you are browsing around.
We did end up having a strange experience in one of the shops we went into. It was a hand made jewelry shop and the owner makes everything in there. The strange part was that he was talking to Lia about how she has tan skin and asks if she has been swimming. He then goes on to say that she is perfect because she is cooked and salted for the cannibals to eat her…….. At that moment I knew I had to start recording because I was not believing what this guy was saying. I did not realize that my camera’s front light was on signaling that it was recording and he saw it. He ended up getting mad and told me that it is bad luck for the shop owners and two years in prison and to delete the footage.
I obliged of course and left. I just wanted to be able to go back and hear what this guy was saying because he was saying a lot of strange stuff.
Another interaction that we had was a guy on the street trying to sell bracelets. He approached us, gave us a fist bump and then proceeded to put a bracelet on us. I immediately knew that he was trying to sell them to us and not actually give them to us, so I told him that we do not have any money. He was also talking about how he is part of an African band and they were holding a performance where we were talking to him. I was actually more interested in the performance than the bracelet so I tried to get more info from him. Once he understood that we were not going to purchase the bracelets, he took the bracelets and walked off without giving us anymore information on the performance. If he would have possibly gave us the bracelets for free, i would have showed up to the performance and donated. It was his loss I guess.
later that day, I was approached by another African dude that did the same greeting and I told him no and walked away.
We went and ate dinner and then has some ice cream at Hans & Gretel because what they had on display looked amazing. The ice cream was good but the actual cinnamon roll cone thing was just ok. It was harder than we expected. We thought it was going to be pretty soft.
